Lilli Ann Suit Journey Part I

Since fall is approaching, I've been thinking about vintage suits.   If you scan the pages of any vintage fashion magazine from the 1930s to the 1950s in the fall issues, you are very likely to find a plethora of suit styles.  There is something so special about a well tailored suit that certainly embellishes the word style and vintage glamour.  Of course, with a well tailored suit you need the icing on the cake in the form of the right accessories and hats.  I have such difficulty with hats that it is a very useful resource for me to go back and look through these fashion magazines and see how ladies of the day styled their suit ensembles.

I'm going to share more of my suit and accessories in the next post but I thought it might be fun to share with you a few images that I sought some inspiration from.

Image to right from Harper's Bazaar 1954.  In this image I think the lady curtsying forward ads an element of charm.  I didn't quite capture this but fun try and it's difficult to see that I am actually holding flowers too.  I am not too crazy about how my image came together but thought I'd share the attempts too as it's all a learning process.

Image to right via MyVintageVogue.  This image is interesting as I think putting the right leg forward ads an element of strength to the composition.  My image is more casual and not as structured.

It is interesting how a certain position and camera angle can give the impression of strength, confidence, softness, sophistication, etc.

I also have a board on Pinterest devoted to Sensations Suits Vintage Style.

I also scanned some sensational suits from two issues of vintage Vogue, hope they can provide inspiration for you too!

I love the risk of a golden yellow hat with a green suit and red shoes.  Only in vintage color.

I'm going to try this at some point, navy suit with red shoes, why not?

Things I've recently added to my want list as a result of cruising through these magazines:

- A bamboo handled purse
-A purse in a light tan leather combination

I also recently saw an image with black toned bamboo bracelets.  These were certainly grand.  I am thinking I see some bamboo in my future:)

I'm also interested in the turban type of hat look.  I have some of these types of hats and the 50s cap hat look is growing on me.

  1. These are all great inspirations, love them all. I'm currently in suit mood as fall is here and winter quickly approaches and these all so great (want them all).

BTW I wear red shoes with a navy dress I own...all the time..so go for it!

  3. These are some beautifully inspirational photographs, thank you so much for posting them! I really love that third one, on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. She just looks so regal and kind of fierce. It's pretty amazing. I think you do a really wonderful job trying to recreate the looks that are so striking in magazines. I've tried to do it myself from time to time, and it's really hard to do those kinds of poses! What seems so glamorous and poised on them can feel so awkward when you try to do it yourself. Practice makes perfect, though...
And we all know you think about vintage suits more often than just in the fall. ;-)

  4. You are the perfect suit girl!!!! But I must tell you that I'm not a suit fan... I don't feel confortable in a suit, I love their shape and design but most of the time don't like them on me!
You made me think that I need to go back to my vintage magazines, they are not easy to stock (I have so much of them), so they are put in boxes that I rarely open....

    1. I'd have to disagree, I love it when you show your suits. You are so great at accessorizing that I think this can also make a suit sing.

  6. Your posts often make me more drawn to suits than I normally am! I've always loved the lines and structure, but I don't generally have a suit-wearing kind of life. Maybe I should have one for when the right occasions come along though!

I'm always looking for model pose inspiration in photos too, but like you I find they never turn out quite as well as I hoped. But it is always worth trying, and at least it gives me some ideas to play with. I find props very helpful to creating a fun fashion photo.

Thanks for sharing all the images. There are some very inspiring hats in amongst these suits! (And, by the way, turbans are having a comeback in modern millinery, so there are a lot of great ideas and images around at the moment, and a lot of vintage inspiration being used in these modern designs!)

  7. Beautiful styling and side-by-side comparisons. Your suit wardrobe, and how you skillfully style each one, is a never ending inspiration to me, dear Joanna. In fact, while I've always loved them, I've developed a deeper appreciation for vintage suits and wear my more frequently since our paths crossed online (thank you!).

  8. Gorgeous images, I particularly like the green suit with the grey fur. I liked seeing your photos with the original poses. You always style your suits very well.

  9. Gorgeous pictures! I love seeing your inspiration. But then I also want to go shopping for more suits... I'm a big fan of the burgundy number labeled "G" and the leopard accessories with its neighbor the (rather dumpy I think, sorry!) blue coat.
